Is stress affecting my Gut?

my gut and stress

If you’re reading this it’s probably because you have frustrating or embarrassing symptoms affecting your gut. These could be anything from bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea or reflux, or a combination of several of these are various times.  All these things can be really stressful and can be bought on by food sensitivities or intolerances, gut health issues or stress itself.

While poor gut health can lead to stress, the actual stress in your life can affect your gut too. And as poor gut health can also bring about brain-symptoms like worry, low-mood and anxiety it’s important to address all these things when looking at root causes of gut issues.

I love to help my clients to incorporate stress-management techniques into their day and you can do the same. Options that my clients like to use are meditation, deep breathing, journaling, watching a funny or uplifting movie, listening to music they love or EFT tapping (emotional freedom technique). The trick is finding an option for stress management that works for you and your lifestyle.

If you notice the issues mainly in a work environment it’s worth looking at areas that you can reduce stress in this area. Working from home, taking yourself for a daily walk outside in the fresh air, increasing your Vit D, taking a gentle yoga or pilates class in your lunch break or just putting your headphone sin and listening to something soothing can help.

These techniques move the body away from the sympathetic nervous system stress response of fight or flight, to the parasympathetic nervous system response, allowing you to rest, digest and heal.
